SEPHORA POP-UP RETAIL: CONCEPT DISCUSSION--09/16/11

The group discussion on Friday was very helpful. I was in the group with Christy, Ashleigh, and Ino.
For me, the discussion allowed me to take all of my ideas and be able to condense them. Due to the fact that I had so many ideas that were so different. It was very hard for me alone to arrive at one concept that I felt like was better than they others. Christy and Ashleigh especially helped me to arrive at a really strong idea. With allowing the fashion week experience to take over the experience with in my pop-up retail store. For most the runway aspect along with the branding of Sephora should be infused into my store in order to create the best experience for the clients.
It is all about creating a Sephora pop-up store that will allow the clients to get the behind the runway 'model' experience, and creating in interactive experience.
For Ashleigh's project, we helped her arrive that she should focus on Kat Von D, to highlight Sephora. It would all be based off of a sweepstakes, where you could win a makeup session with Kat Von D, done by her at Sephora. The products would be her products to really promote her line and get a lot of marketing done before her pop-up store even begins.
While Christy focused on a train route of the London area. She had a really strong idea and was really inspired from this route in London. She really was focused on creating a transition throughout the store.
Ino was focused on having his store in Brazil. He wanted to infuse the concept of the formation from the patterns of the way that birds fly. Ino really wanted to focus on the products and let them be the color. Also focus on the culture behind Exotic women. BOLD. COLORFUL. POWERFUL. EMBRACE.
Overall, we all got a lot out of the group discussion and I feel that it was very helpful not only to my concept development and schematics but for everyone else in the group as well.

DOWNTOWN GREENWAY PROJECT--CONCEPT

Key words

Motion

Progression

Compression

Release

Motion and progression are at the heart of our environmental design for the Downtown Greensboro Greenway project. In our design, we aim to create an experience for all patrons to enjoy nature and partake in physical activities like running, walking, strolling, and etc. The section we are designing of the Greenway is entitled ‘motion’, which is directly correlated to the hustle and bustle of Downtown. The surrounding areas that make up out project are Freeman Mill Road, the railroad tracks of West Lee Street, Lee Street and Spring Garden Street, which are cornerstones for the abandoned underpass. Our Greenway design is depicted through the use of compression and release to enhance the experience of the people viewing the underpass. Compression and release are illustrated through the use of geometry and the pre-existing slopes with the nature of the land. Within our design, the slope of the land welds into the actual structure of the underpass using more angular lines to abstract the slope of the land. Geometric shapes and angular lines create more of an experience for the people interacting with the Greenway; by allowing them to be in a more intimate setting [compression] or in a more revealing setting [release]. Two color choices [green + orange] will make up our design; two bands conjoining the stretch of our area into one band. The two bands are a metaphor for the underpasses’ that made the construction of Greensboro possible. They pass and finally conjoin to form the railroad underpass. Moreover, we want people to feel as though they are moving from one area, then into a new experience of compression and release created by geometric shapes. This will allow the person experiencing the space to feel a progression and movement towards the next area of the pathway.

---LIGHT + COLOR---

Light and color go hand in had in my opinion. They are interconnected. However, you can also analyze them separately.
Light has been around since the beginning of time, and as we have evolved as humans with our technology, our lighting has progressed into not only natural light but artificial. I feel that light just like color can provoke us to feel a certain emotion, or controls how we as people act ourselves. Do the light and color make us feel more intimate or more exposed. Do we feel happy, energized, gloomy, sensual? Moods and emotions are directly related to the color and the lighting qualities in a certain space. Color is important in design not only for creating certain emotions within us, but color allows us as designers to highlight certain aspects of a space and to show hierarchy. For example, if on the same wall you have mostly cream color, and then have a rectangle of color around a painting it highlights the painting. Therefore, bringing recognition to a certain area of the wall. Lighting can be used in the same manner. You can use specific kinds of light to like track lighting to highlight a painting for example. However, light is more powerful than highlighting a painting. It can be used with color to create a wash or graze of color and light. Light can be bold and so can color. Moreover, they can also be soft and airy. Light allows us to showcase textures and, therefore, allows us to use our senses of touch and sight to experience a place. However, no matter what the color of a space is, it can take on different tones of that color by the use of light. Depending on if the light is natural, or artificial, dimmed, or at full emmitence can change our perspective of any color. Overall, light and color do and should directly affect design. It can change peoples outlook with just a stroke of color or a fun use of light. They have a strong power in the design world and always will.
